Phone Review: the Samsung M3310

Korea is getting first dibs on Samsung’s dual sliding M3310, and why not, Samsung is a Korean company after all. Anyway, with the current focus of Samsung on the western markets being their upcoming Bada (and whatever phone will be using it) and the re-introduction of the Genio/Corby with their new Lindy. Still, there is always room for more phones, and for a device like the Samsung M3310 which is a dedicated music-playing phone, people are certain to take notice.

The biggest feature of this phone is its dual sliding mechanism. More than just a gimmick, the screen will slide down to reveal a speaker; it’s a pretty little addition that should prove very functional, especially for music fans.

Bands, Screen and Audio

The M3310 is a basic GSM device, making it just on the same tier as some the basic Sony Ericsson WalkMan phones and a couple of eXpress Music devices. This phone supports GSM 850, 900, 1800 and 1900. As you might expect, the phone is a little on the thick side, 101 x 48.7 x 15.9 mm is a very manageable size for a slider. At 95.7 grams, it is also very light –despite having the extra speaker.

The TFT screen on this phone is a humble little 2.1 incher with a resolution of 240 x 320 pixels (still pretty high-res for such a small screen). Anyway, the screen works nicely, delivering excellent quality images and a bright clear display. The depth of 256 thousand colors is already pretty good for a phone in this range too.

As you might expect, the Samsung M3310 also comes with the basic features of a phone. It supports Mp3 ringtones and also has a vibration function. It uses Samsung’s DNSe (Digital Natural Sound engine) for high quality audio output that you can have on the speakers or on a headphone of your choice thanks to the 3.5mm audio jack. The device also supports Bluetooth speakers and headsets if you prefer those instead.

Network Connectivity and Memory

The phone support GPRS and EDGE class 10 which deliver a maximum connection speed of 48 kbps on GRPS and 236 kbps on EDGE. These speeds are rarely seen as network connectivity tends to be much slower in reality. With that said, this phone is truly only for people who hardly or never use their mobile phones for web access.

The device only has 40 MB of internal storage, so saving music files on this device for device for playback will require the use of a micro SD flash card. While 8GB is a lot of space, that is already the largest capacity SD card support by the phone’s reader. If you already use a larger capacity card from your previous device, be warned that you will have to switch to a smaller 8GB card.

Camera Details

This device comes with a built-in 3.15 mega pixel camera. It’s a little surprising to see a 3MP snapper on this phone because it has low internal memory and bad networking options. It is not really encouraging to take images when you are short on space and you cannot even upload files easily.
